1st Cowbridge Scout Group was formed on February 22nd 1969. We started with a Scout Troop and a Cub Pack meeting at Llanblethian Church Hall while the Group was looking for suitable land to build our own Scout Hall.
In January 1978, the Scout Troop moved to the Cowbridge Institute (behind the Town Hall, where Pocketful of Presents, the Old Institute and Rogers Chinese are now based). A second Cub Pack was started at the same time, and was called Cowbridge Cubs with the Cub Pack that remained at Llanblethian Church Hall renamed Llanblethian Cubs.
Due to the popularity of Scouting in the town, a third Cub Pack was started in January 1980 in Aberthin, and this pack was called Aberthin Cubs.
In 1984, the Scout Group agreed to lease the land behind the Cattle Market and started building our Hall which was opened in September 1987 with the official opening held on 31st October by Gervas and Betty Clay, who is the daughter of the Founder of Scouting – Lord Baden Powell. The opening of our new Scout Hall brought all three Cub Packs and the Scout Troop together using the same Hall.
On the 10th January 1990, the Group welcomed the youngest Section in the Scouting family, the Beavers to the Group,
In the 1990’s we also started our own Venture Unit which was open to people aged 16-20 and this remained open for approximately 5 years.
In 1998, the Group welcomed girls to all of our Sections.
Today, we have a Beaver Colony, a Cub Pack and a Scout Troop. The Group currently has just under 100 young members who are enjoying a whole range of activities such as camping and sleepovers, air rifle shooting, archery, caving, rock climbing, hiking, coasteering, surfing, white water rafting and more.
